What is Employability?
“A set of achievements – skills, understandings and personal attributes – that make students more likely to gain employment and be successful in their chosen occupations”
“The skills almost everyone needs to do almost any job.”
Employability is not just about skills, it’s also about capabilities or competencies: aptitude, attitude and behaviour. Employability is not the same as subject knowledge, qualifications or specialist experience. A brilliant first degree, a PhD and a list of published papers on your CV may not be enough to secure a position. More and more research suggests that, in order to land the job you would really like, you need a portfolio of employability skills.
Employers like to recruit students who have gone the ‘extra mile’, 'joined in', can work both individually and in a team, shown a capacity for leadership, and demonstrated a willingness to take risks by spending time travelling, and experiencing new situations and cultures.
At The Chalfonts Community College, we organise various interventions to raise awareness of Employability skills and to emphasise just how important they are. The purpose of the Employability role within the College is to:
- Raise aspirations and broaden the thinking of students in relation to the various routes they might consider post GCSE
- To provide information about the various routes to help them make informed choices, by organising trips and inviting professionals in to speak
- To provide 1:1 or group coaching on being ‘work ready’, to include work on building confidence, CVs, interview skills and networking skills
Local Market Information
It is really important that we provide information about the local labour market to our students. With high quality information, our young people are able to make choices about their careers, and develop their skills to meet employment demands. This report shows where the skills shortages are, where the vacancies appear to be, by occupation and industry within Bucks and also includes projected occupational change.
